Area’s to avoid in Leicester when enjoying a short stay city break

Leicester is generally a safe and welcoming city, but like any place, there are areas that might be best avoided, especially for visitors who aren’t familiar with the area. Most tourists tend to stick to central areas, where attractions, shopping, and restaurants are more concentrated, but if you’re exploring beyond that, here are some areas that might not be ideal for a short stay that the team at Stayful have put together to make sure that you enjoy your stay in Leicester.

Some Parts of the West End

While parts of the West End are fine and offer great multicultural experiences, certain areas near Woodgate and Aylestone may have higher crime rates or be less well-maintained compared to Leicester city centre. These can feel a little more isolated and less lively for tourists.

Saffron Lane

This area can feel a bit rundown in certain parts and has a reputation for higher crime rates. It’s not a typical tourist spot, so it might be worth avoiding unless you have a specific reason to visit.

St. Matthews Area

Close to the train station, this area can be a bit gritty and isn’t particularly scenic for tourists. It has a higher concentration of social housing, and while it’s improving, it might feel a little less inviting.

Some Parts of North Evington

North Evington is another area that’s generally residential, but there are pockets that have struggled with social issues. It’s not known for tourist-friendly activities, so unless you’re visiting someone or have a particular reason to be there, it’s worth considering alternatives.

The Old Lanes around the Train Station at Night

While the area around the train station (such as around Aylestone Road and London Road) is typically safe during the day, at night it can get a little quieter and may feel less secure, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.

General Tips for when visiting Leicester

  1. Always be cautious of your surroundings, especially at night, in less crowded or poorly lit areas.
  2. Stick to well-populated, well-lit streets, especially after dark.
  3. The City Centre, Leicester Market, and New Walk areas are all well-maintained, bustling, and have much more to offer for visitors.
